Climate change is already negatively impact biodiversity across the globe, especially on islands. Madagascar is one of the world’s “hottest” island biodiversity hotspots, yet little is known about how climate change and continued forest loss will affect many imperiled species. Historical climate change has played a significant role in shaping habitats and species extinctions across Madagascar, largely due to significant multi-year wet and dry period fluctuations. (1,2) Climate-induced environmental change is particularly disadvantageous for species in discontinuous habitats as they lack viable migration routes to seek more favorable conditions. (3) I am using a multi-disciplinary approach to assess the current and long-term impacts of climate change on Madagascar’s wildlife.
